Labor board issues complaint against UPMC

The Pittsburgh office of the National Labor Relations Board filed a complaint Wednesday charging UPMC with 13 violations of workers’ rights, including restricting when and where employees can talk about the unionization effort and interrogating employees about their union sympathies.  The complaint is the third by the labor relations board against the hospital conglomerate since 2013 as the Service Employees International Union has tried to organize hospital staff members.

UPMC issued the following statement:

“The SEIU has yet again resorted to manufactured unfair labor practices charges in an attempt to discredit UPMC during its unsuccessful attempt to organize hospital employees. For the SEIU, this is no longer about representing its members but rather about advancing its political goals by creating a media spectacle of protests and unfair labor practice charges that will resurface as long as UPMC hospital employees resist the SEIU organizing activity.”

In November, the hospital chain was found in violation of workers’ rights by an administrative law judge of the National Labor Relations Board. The new violations come from a period after the second round of complaints were issued but before the hospital was found in violation of workers’ rights.
