Grocery Workers Return To Talks With SoCal Supermarket Chains
Source: CBSLOCAL.COM

Union members returned to negotiations Monday with three of the Southland’s largest grocery chains.

KNX 1070′s Margaret Carerro reports the contract with over 60,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) union and grocery chains Ralph’s, Albertsons and Vons is set to expire on March 2.

Mike Shimpock, spokesperson for the UFCW Local 770, said the union wants the supermarket chains to provide members with what Shimpock described as “fair pay” and other “fundamental” benefits.

“We haven’t met with the companies yet, so I can’t say with any certainty what’s gonna be on the table until we see proposals from the employers,” Shimpock said.

The last breakdown in contract talks resulted in a labor strike back in 2003, which lead to 70,000 grocery clerks from Ralph’s, Albertsons and Vons to walk off the job for about five months.
