PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Workers at Seven Hills Rhode Island, a company that provides services to people with disabilities, are on a one-day strike Friday after their employer imposed salary and benefit cuts.

Labor unions, including the Rhode Island AFL-CIO and United Nurses & Allied Professionals (UNAP), plan a press conference for 4 p.m. at Seven Hills' facility at 1 Cumberland St. in Woonsocket.

According to the unions, Seven Hills imposed a 5-percent pay cut, eliminated workers' dental-plan benefit, and reduced medical benefits and employer contributions to worker retirement plans.

Service providers for people with developmental disabilities, such as Seven Hills, had their reimbursement from the state drastically lowered in last year's state budget, by a total of about $24 million.
