Teachers Union Passes Furlough Deal, shorter calendar
Source: Daily News Los Angeles

The union representing Los Angeles Unified teachers has voted by a wide margin to approve a furlough deal that will make the school calendar one week shorter this year and next, officials announced Saturday.

United Teachers Los Angeles members voted nearly 4-1 in favor of the deal, which is estimated to save 2,109 jobs from layoffs for the 2010-11 school year. It is also expected to prevent the district from needing to increase class sizes.

The union said 21,466 members voted in favor and 5,612 members voted against.

"This is a huge victory," said UTLA president A.J. Duffy. "The victory is for our students - because we're bringing all those teachers back and keeping class sizes down as well."

The deal is expected to come before the school board Tuesday.

"I am very pleased," LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said through a district spokesperson. "I appreciate the understanding of the district's teachers and the sacrifices they are making in instructional time and salary."

Under the agreement, teachers will take five unpaid furlough days this year and seven days next year, including two staff planning days in which students would not normally be in school.

District officials negotiated the deal with the union as part of several efforts to bridge a $640 million budget gap for the 2010-11 school year.

The furloughs are expected to save about $140 million. Without them, district officials had planned to move ahead with about 6,300 layoffs of teachers, counselors and other employees.
