Engineers and technicians at St. Luke's Hospital Thursday rejected the chance to become part of Teamsters Local 59, a hospital spokesman said.

"We are very pleased that these employees decided to continue working directly with Southcoast rather than through union representation," said Stephanie Poyant, public information officer for Southcoast Health System, which owns the New Bedford hospital.

Teamsters officials could not be reached for comment.

The National Labor Relations Board conducted Thursday's vote to unionize the hospital's "skilled maintenance worker unit."

Local 59 covers Greater New Bedford, Cape Cod and the Islands, including workers in maintenance, ferry transportation, package car drivers, truck drivers, laundry, airport employees, textile, clerical, teachers, police officers and other professions.

A seven-day grace period, after which the NLRB can certify the results, began after the vote Thursday afternoon.
