Fire union concerned about the way new chief was hired
By: KTVA CBS 11 News

The union that represents the Anchorage Fire Department is expressing concern over the selection process of the new fire chief.

In a statement, The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1264 welcomes former AFD Chief John Fullenwider back on as the new chief, but the union said it has concerns over how the position was filled.

The union said similar-sized cities would conduct a candidate search locally and nationally. The union said it’s also concerned about staffing shortages, especially when it comes to paramedics.

On Thursday, Mayor Dan Sullivan’s office announced current chief Chris Bushue would be stepping down and Fullenwider would return.

According to Anchorage Assembly chairman Patrick Flynn the mayor can hire whom he wants for the job, but the hire has to be confirmed by the Assembly.

Attempts to contact the mayor’s spokesperson about the union’s concerns were unsuccessful.
