USW to Confront ExxonMobil about Pay Inequity, Safety Issues at Shareholders Meeting
Source: PR NewsWire

The United Steelworkers (USW) will be raising pay equity and safety concerns at the ExxonMobil shareholders meeting May 30, 9:00 a.m., at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Afterward, the USW and its labor and community allies will be holding a demonstration.

For two years the all-female clerical unit at the ExxonMobil Beaumont, Texas, refinery has gone without a raise while the predominately male production and maintenance workers have received raises in each of those years.

The USW is also going to raise safety concerns at ExxonMobil's facilities. At some of its sites the company tends to focus on personal safety—slips, falls, sprains and fractures—not poor safety practices that lead to incidents like explosions and fires. ExxonMobil is one of the richest oil companies in the world and it can afford to do a better job on process safety.

Process safety refers to items like the replacement and maintenance of equipment; having systems in place to insure that pipes and machinery are in top condition; adequate training for employees; and staffing so that workers don't do too much overtime that they get fatigued.
