Members of three locals within Service Employees International Union have voted to unite into one local: SEIU United Service Workers West.

The new local will represent more than 40,000 janitors, security officers, airport service workers and other property service workers across California, including almost 1,400 in the Sacramento region.

The three locals that voted to merge include 1877, known for its “Justice for Janitors” campaign; 24/7, which represents security officers in Northern California, and Security Officers United in Los Angeles (SOULA) Local 2006, which represents security workers in Southern California and at Kaiser Permanente statewide.

The union is fast-growing and diverse, said Mike Garcia, president of the new local. The membership is largely immigrant and Latino, but includes large numbers of African American, Asian and Caucasian members.

In the Sacramento region, the merged local will represent:

• 1,063 workers from Local 1877 who work in janitorial services and retail

• 75 security workers from 24/7 and

• 250 security workers at Kaiser Permanente from SOULA 2006.

The merged local will bring more strength to the bargaining table, Chavez said, “and efforts to improve the situation for working people in their local communities and California overall.”

First up will be a campaign to elect public officials who will champion working families, he added. That means electing Jerry Brown governor in November, he said.
