Strike at Honeywell plant entering third week

The machinists strike at Honeywell’s Bannister plant completed its second week with the company filing a charge of unfair labor practice against the union.

A statement from Honeywell said its complaint filed with the National Labor Relations Board’s regional office in Overland Park cited union officials for an incident Wednesday.

The company said union officials had blocked a delivery vehicle from entering the plant and then “accosted” its occupants with spoken threats and intimidation. It said Kansas City police were called and escorted the vehicle into the plant.

Union officials were not available for comment. Lodge 778 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers previously filed a charge with the labor board that said the company had bargained in bad faith, a claim that the company has denied.

Workers walked out after rejecting the company’s contract offer on Oct. 9. A federal mediator talked with both sides Friday, but no additional negotiation meetings have been set, the company said.

The union represents 840 hourly workers at the facility, which employs about 2,800. The plant makes non-nuclear parts for

nuclear weapons.
