Ineos to sack union boss

INEOS is prepared to sack the union official who was at the heart of a dispute that nearly led to the closure last week of the giant Grangemouth petroleum complex in Scotland.

The dismissal of Stevie Deans, Unite’s long-standing convener at Grangemouth and chairman of Labour’s Falkirk West constituency, is expected after Ineos finished investigating his activities.

Deans was suspended by Labour this year amid allegations that he attempted to illegally rig the selection of a party candidate. He was reinstated by the party after “key evidence was withdrawn”.

Ineos, however, launched its own probe into whether Deans was using company time and resources for union business. The law firm that did the inquiry found that he spent a quarter of his time on union matters. Deans has asked for five days to respond to the findings.

The company decided to close the plant last week after the union rejected a plan to impose pension cuts and freeze pay. It reversed the decision on Friday when the union agreed to new terms.
