UFCW Local 880 reaches agreement in principle with Giant Eagle and Heinen's
By: Janet H. Cho

United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 880 President Carl Ivka announced that the union has reached an agreement in principle with grocers Giant Eagle Inc. and Heinen's Fine Foods on the terms of a new three-year contract covering about 9,000 workers in Greater Cleveland.

"After 10 joint negotiating sessions over the course of three months, the parties were able to agree in principle upon the terms of the new three-year agreements," Local 880 said in a written statement that did not offer details on the terms. The parties are trying to negotiate a new contract to replace the one that expired in early September.

"These negotiations were made unusually difficult by the need to address the added costs imposed on the workers by the Affordable Care Act," the statement added.

The contract does not cover all the employees of either supermarket, including employees at Heinen's four Chicago-area stores in Barrington, Glenview, Bannockburn and Lake Bluff, Illinois, and employees at Giant Eagle's no-frills Good Cents stores in Brooklyn, Eastlake, Parma, and Ravenna.

This contract covers only Cleveland-area Giant Eagle and Market District stores; Giant Eagle stores in Akron, Canton, and Youngstown, and a few independently owned Giant Eagles, are covered by separate agreements.

Over the next few weeks, the agreement in principle must be written as tentative agreements, signed, and presented to Heinen's and Giant Eagle members for their review and consideration. Employees will vote on the proposal via secret ballot, at meetings expected to take place after Thanksgiving.

"it's the largest grocery workers' contract in Northeast Ohio with approximately 9,000 workers," the labor union said. "Further details will be provided at a later date."
