Union Seeks to Organize Delta Office and Clerical Workers

The International Association of Machinists has filed for a union representation election among some 2,200 office and clerical workers at Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, another step in the process of resolving labor issues in Delta's 2008 merger with Northwest Airlines.

Office and clerical workers from Northwest are unionized, while those from Delta are non-union. An election would determine whether the combined group will be union or non-union.

The Machinists union on Thursday lost an election to represent baggage handlers at the combined Delta, and is awaiting the completion of unionization elections among stock clerks and customer service agents at Delta.

Machinists union spokesman Joe Tiberi said the filing for an election among office and clerical workers took longer because of uncertainty about which workers fell under that job description. The union met with Delta on the matter and conducted an investigation. The filing seeks a single carrier ruling from the National Mediation Board, which oversees airline labor matters, to trigger the election process. If the required 35 percent of employees show interest in an election, the election isn't expected to occur until next year.
