Wis. Gov-Elect Wants Immediate Union Concessions

Wisconsin Republican Gov.-elect Scott Walker says he wants unionized state workers to start paying more for their health care and pension costs early next year.

The unions have reached tentative agreements with the state that would have to be approved by the Legislature. Walker has urged Democrats not to approve the deals before Republicans take over in January.

Walker said Friday that he wants to see state workers making more concessions sooner so the savings could start earlier to prevent deeper cuts in other areas of the budget like education and health care.

The state faces a projected two-year budget shortfall of about $3 billion.

Union leaders and Democrats say the deals should be approved now, especially since the two-year period they cover is six months away from being over.
