Continental fleet workers ratify union contract

NEW YORK (AP) — Continental Airlines fleet service employees have ratified a contract reached with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The airline, a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc., called the vote a "positive step forward" in a statement released Wednesday.

According to the Teamsters, the deal is retroactive to July 1. It calls for 10.5 percent pay increases over the life of a 30-month contract. It also includes provisions addressing discipline, terminations, outsourcing and furloughs. The union said it is the first contract for the fleet service workers, which joined the Teamsters less than a year ago.

The next round of talks will include the combined workforce of Continental and United Airlines. The two companies combined in October but continue to operate as separate airlines, pending authorization to function as a single entity from the Federal Aviation Administration. That approval is expected by the end of 2011, the Chicago-based holding company said on its website.
