Kingston Hospital Nurses Vote Against Unionization

By: Paul Kirby

KINGSTON — Nurses at Kingston Hospital have rejected a proposal to unionize, a union spokesman said on Tuesday.
Mark Genovese, of the New York State Nurses Association, said the National Labor Relations Board has finished its counting of challenged ballots in the unionization and concluded the proposal was defeated, 95-77.
Fifteen of the uncounted ballots were contested by the union, nine by the National Labor Relations Board and two by the hospital.
Genovese said the union will not challenge the outcome and has conceded.
“When we do have strong evidence of management misconduct, then we would file charges,” Genovese said, adding there’s no evidence of that being the case in the Kingston vote.
Genovese said that, by law, the nurses at Kingston Hospital cannot hold another unionization vote until a year from now.
In 2008, the nurses at nearby Benedictine Hospital voted to join the New York State Nurses Association.
A total of about 200 nurses work at Kingston and Benedictine hospitals, both of which are operated by HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley.
HealthAlliance spokeswoman Sylvia Murphy said she could not yet comment on the Kingston vote because the company had yet to be formally notified about the result by the labor board.
